This Is My Fight Song

The other day I was driving home and I happened to catch Rachel Platten’s “Fight Song” on the radio.  I am a sucker for any song that’s motivational and inspiring.  If you are not familiar with the song, the chorus goes like this: “This is my fight song.  Take-back-my-life song.  Prove-I’m-alright song.  My powers turned on.  Starting right now I’ll be strong.  I’ll play my fight song.  And I don’t really care if nobody else believes.  Cause I still got a lot of fight left in me.”

I started to reflect on the importance that we all have our own fight song.  We are all in a fight.  We are all battling up against something.  We all need a burst of inspiration in our darkest hour, when the weight of the world rests on our shoulders and it all seems too much to bear.

I want to encourage all of you that are in the heat of the fight with this verse from Psalms 118:14: “The Lord is my strength and my song; he has given me victory.” The Lord wants to be the one that you rely upon to be your strength.  In fact, He wants to be the one to fight on your behalf.  In Jesus, there is victory.

I remember when I was going through one of the hardest times of my life.  I was suffering from severe depression and anxiety, among other things.  My Pastor at the time had instructed me to always keep a song of praise on my lips.  I began to sing out in worship when I felt overwhelmed, alone, and riddled with fear and worry.  I made my worship my fight song.  It was my way of asserting a confidence and trust that my God would pull me through.  It was my way of telling the enemy that He had no rights to me and that I would overcome.  In 2 Chronicles chapter 20, we see that King Jehoshaphat appoints men to go out at the head of the army singing praises to the Lord.  In verse 22, it tells us, “As they began to sing and praise, the Lord set ambushes against the men of Ammon and Moab and Mount Seir who were invading Judah, and they were defeated.”  I believe wholeheartedly that as we make praise our fight song, the Lord moves on our behalf defeating the enemy of our souls.

No matter who you are, where you are or what you are going through, look your enemy in the eye and sing Him your fight song, a declaration of trust and confidence in the God who has already won the victory.
