The Husband List

I don’t know if guys do this, but single girls make lists when it comes to what they are looking for in their husbands.  During the waiting process, they write a well thought out checklist of qualities they are looking for in a future spouse.  We are often told of the importance of having standards (definitely true), so we try to wrap our minds around what exactly it is that we want, so that we won’t settle for anything less than we deserve.  I’ve participated in excercises like this before and have written out long lists.  These days my list is pretty short.  My boo thang has gotta love Jesus and he’s gotta love me…also, he needs to have a pretty solid sense of humor, because I like to laugh.  That’s my list.

Singleness gets a bad wrap.  We can be so eager to partner up that we miss out on the benefits of this unique season.  One of my favorite benefits of singleness is that it gives us the opportunity to discover ourselves.  Sorry if that sounds cliche, but it’s so true.  In this season, I am getting to know who I am, what is important to me and what I stand for.  Even more than that, I am learning who I want to be.  I think that in our singleness we have a great opportunity to consider where we are and where we are going.  We can consider our strengths and our weaknesses, as well as how we desire to grow.

I guess what I’m saying is that in this season I am less concerned with what kind of husband I will have and more concerned with what kind of woman I am becoming. Now don’t get me wrong.  I am beyond excited to see how everything pans out and who I end up with.  I am a girl after all.  But that will happen when it happens, no need to rush it.  Right now, I want to make the most of every moment and opportunity to learn and to grow and to find joy and meaning in all the little things in life.  And when that day comes, I will be even more prepared to be a blessing to my husband, because I made the most out of this season.  I’ll know who I am and I’ll have a solid relationship with Jesus to stand on.  Some day I want this well-known verse to be true of me: “Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her” (Prov. 31:28).
